In this edition of 30 on 3D, learn how to cut paper-thin parts on the ProtoMAX. The ProtoMAX is a compact abrasive waterjet, designed to fit into your space. The waterjet can cut almost everything – metal, plastic, glass, wood, and more. For this example, we’ll be cutting a 0.010 in. of carbon steel shim stock.
First, you’ll need to sandwich the shim stock between two 0.080 in. thick polycarbonates. Then, fasten the plastic together with masking tape.
After the sandwich is secure, set up the machine and the cutting profile. Next, mount the material to the machine. When the mount is secure, run the cut. After the sandwiched part is cut, pull the material off the machine, disassemble the sandwich, and you’ll have your cut thin part.
