In this edition of 30 on 3D, Senior R&D Engineer, Peter Montgomery, explains how to create honeycomb structures using Materialise Magics.
The ability to honeycomb structures in parts is a great way to lightweight a part. Going through the process of removing mass from a part in Magics instead of CAD is a much more efficient process. In Magics you can select a face you would like to apply a honeycomb to and adjust wall thickness, detail size, hole diameter, and infill thickness.
As you adjust the dimensions, a live preview can show you what effect your decision has on the part. When you’re satisfied with your adjustments you can hit apply. You’ll notice that the pattern is only applied to sections of the part that can support the honeycomb structure.
The honeycomb structure allows for faster printing and in geometry-specific applications will allow for enhanced performance and part characteristics.
