Sometimes we are faced with the common misconception of smaller build volumes not being able to accommodate larger parts. On this edition of 30 on 3D, Senior R&D Engineer, Peter Montgomery, explains how to print parts larger than your printer’s build envelope by sectioning pieces using Insight. Insight makes production of larger parts possible, streamlining the pre-print workflow for engineers and system operators.
By learning a few tips and tricks for Insight, you will soon realize the possibilities are endless. To learn how to section your STL, follow these quick and easy steps:
1. Once you have sliced your STL, click on the Slice tab at the top left corner and scroll down to Section with profile…
2. This will open up an over-head view of your STL. From here, select a section of the part that you want to split. Once you have chosen a spot, just click and a line will be created.
3. Once you have created your section, click the Ok tab to the right in your Section with profile menu.
4. Finally, Insight will prompt you to save your Section Curve in which case you will select Ok. A second prompt will appear asking you to Save before sectioning, here you will click Yes and your new section will be created and ready to be sent to the printer.
