MDX-50: Interview With A Senior Sales Engineer

April 1, 2021 By Talena Graham

The MDX-50 is a CNC milling machine. It has advanced capabilities that are simple. The MDX-50 reduces operation time and simplifies production so users of all abilities can create functional parts. Learn more about this versatile machine from our interview with Purple Platypus’ Senior Sales Engineer, Max Semko.

Can you briefly describe the MDX-50?

The MDX-50 is an office-friendly desktop CNC milling machine. It combines precise automated milling, with unmatched ease of use. It has a sturdy frame construction and redesigned safety enclosure. It has a built-in debris tray and an integrated control panel.

The MDX-50 features a 5-tool automatic tool changer, LED status indicator light, and an optional rotary axis. It also features an innovative tool sensor system and new multi-shank tool adapters. The MDX-50 is capable of precise milling on a wide range of materials. Some examples include wood, composites, prototyping foam, mechanical plastics, resins, and modeling wax.

What are your favorite features of the MDX-50?

My favorite feature of the MDX-50 is hands-down the automatic tool changer (ATC). The MDX-50 comes standard with a 6-position tool changer. It prevents the operator from performing time-consuming manual tool changes and eliminates the need for compressed air.

How long have you been selling/ working with the MDX-50?

The MDX-50 was released in the fall of 2016, but I have been selling the Roland DGA product line since 2013.

Why is the MDX-50 the ideal solution for prototypes and short-run production?

Versatility and ease of use are two things that come to mind. The MDX-50 can mill a wide variety of materials with a superior finish and surface quality. The mill is bundled with intuitive SRP Player CAM software. It can mill one larger part, or an array of smaller parts, due to its large milling area. Engineers producing prototypes and entrepreneurs producing short-runs will benefit from the MDX-50.

What industries do you see the MDX-50 being used in?

The MDX-50 could be successfully used in consumer goods, medical devices, and education. The MDX-50 is useful for both average consumers and professionals.

How does the MDX-50 compare to the SRM-20?

The MDX-50 is the product of over thirty years of Roland DGA motion control development. It has a large milling area of 16 x 12 x 4 in., which is double the size of the SRM-20. It combines a 6-position automated tool changer with an optional rotary axis. The SRM-20’s basic workflow is a lengthy process. The MDX-50 streamlines this process by using an optional rotary axis. On average, users are 30% more productive.

How does the MDX-50 compare to the other milling machines on the market?

The MDX-50 is in a class of its own. Roland DGA products are covered by multi-level customer support. Typical consumer mills come with very limited technical support and customer service. The MDX-50 is user-friendly. It doesn’t need highly-trained technicians to service it, like industrial mills do. The MDX-50 offers more value than unsupported consumer mills. But it’s significantly less expensive than industrial milling machines.

It includes an SRP Player and an intuitive CAM program where milling settings can be set up in five simple steps. ClickMill provides direct control over the MDX-50. The user can operate it without access to CAD or CAM software. For advanced users, the MDX-50 supports G-code NC programming language. This range of options makes the unit appealing to both consumers and professionals.
