For August’s Part of the Month, Matthew DeGroat, Purple Porcupine Service Bureau Manager, chose a part that prompts a double-take: a PolyJet-printed, realistic human arm.
Some backstory: Matt has been part of Purple for over a decade. He has had the chance to witness the PolyJet capabilities grow. This model is the perfect example of how far PolyJet has come.
Matt chose this part because he’s into “all that artistic stuff,” which apparently ranges from figurines and architecture to incredibly realistic human arms. Despite deciding to spotlight it, Matt admits that he finds the arm a little off-putting. Regardless of how “off-putting” this part may be to some, there’s no argument about how impressive it is.
How It Was Made: To create the 3D file, a mystery volunteer’s arm was scanned. The file was then printed on the Stratasys J850 using Agilus30 CMY, which allows for full-color elastomeric parts.
Why 3D Printing was Essential: The Stratasys J850 allows for the creation of life-like prototypes. As Matt highlighted, PolyJet is the ideal tool for the artistic capabilities that 3D printing has to offer. The J850 allows for the use of over 650,000 colors and a virtually unlimited combination of materials. Outside of eerily realistic arms, PolyJet technology is used by a wide variety of companies to create realistic prototypes, produce functional models that mimic organs, and even for surgeon training.
