April’s Part of the Month is dedicated to all Lakers fans. If you’re anything like Saxon Swart, Porcupine Sales Engineer, you were probably excited to hear about the team’s newest addition, Luka Dončić.
As both a basketball fan and 3D printing enthusiast, Saxon knew exactly which part to choose.
The Luka Dončić “77” 3D Printed Hoodie
Beyond being a tribute to Luka Dončić, this hoodie showcases an exciting application of 3D printing. The texture you see on the hoodie is a 3D printed design that is fully imprinted onto the sweatshirt. It’s machine washable, dryer safe, and nothing you’ve ever seen in Lakers merch before.
How Can You Get One?
In the rest of this blog post, we’ll break down how the technology works and how the piece was printed.
But if you’re just a die-hard Lakers fan like Saxon and want to show Luka some love, you can grab your own hoodie below.
So, How’d We Do It?
The iconic “77” on Luka’s jersey was recreated in 3D with a thin pin design. Each pin measuring about 3 mm tall. When creating the design, Cameron Williams, Senior R&D Engineer, split each pin in half—one side gold, the other purple—and added a black cap on top. This gave the large “77” a distinctive, subtle appearance when looking at the design straight-on.
The Color Shift In Action
As the hoodie moves, the split color design is revealed, giving the hoodie a unique, eye-catching look. This feature is Saxon’s favorite part of the hoodie.
Aside from being a huge Lakers fan, why did Saxon choose to highlight this hoodie? He said, “It’s like taking the coolest technology, PolyJet, and putting it on clothing—combining two things I really enjoy.”
How Can You Do It?
When printing on fabric, there’s one key requirement: the material must be porous. This allows the resin to cure directly into the fabric during printing, forming a strong bond. The result? A fully machine-washable 3D printed design. Purple is the only Stratasys reseller in the U.S. with this capability in-house. The best part? We offer 3D printing on fabric as a service.
While I can’t share project details from what we’ve worked on with customers, I can say I’m consistently impressed by the pieces that come off our printer. It’s an exciting blend of fashion and 3D printing. Through creativity and collaboration with designers, we’ve developed some truly unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.
