The Mandrel Clamp is a functional internal component of the Onulis WRAP Pro. The Onulis WRAP Pro is an innovative product that takes unused resin from PolyJet printers and transforms it into solid plastic. If you want to learn more about the WRAP, click here. This clamp secures the mandrel inside the machine. Its well-designed hinge allows it to be produced as a single component without springs, pins, or assembly.
The H350 enables the production of functional parts, such as the Mandrel Clamp. This PA11 clamp offers high ductility, impact resistance, and fatigue resistance. It truly is an end-use part.
PA11 allows the part to flex comfortably without breaking while maintaining the integrity of the part’s geometry, making it ideal for the customer’s needs. The part’s design flexibility means it can be easily adjusted since 3D printing voided the constraints and expenses of an injection mold. This adaptability is key for the clamp in production, where precision and quick design changes are essential.
Saxon emphasizes that PA11 offers customers a durable, high-performance material that meets manufacturing demands, ensuring reliable functionality and efficient production. He calls this design flexibility “a key advantage of SAF technology.”
Not only does Saxon praise the clamp’s impressive functionality, but when asked why it’s his favorite part, he couldn’t help but jokingly grin and say it’s “cool looking and fun to play with.”
So, how was it made?
The clamp was printed on an H350 using PA11 material, resulting in a total of 46 unique parts produced and saving $900,000 in injection molding tooling costs. The build time was 12 hours and 30 minutes for 24 parts, made possible by the H350’s high nesting density. This allowed Onulis the flexibility to print a variety of machine components in a single build.
