If you’ve been following our social media accounts, then you’re probably aware that we were featured on Paul McCartney’s Instagram earlier today. With nearly 11K likes on his Instagram account and growing, you’re probably wondering what the deal is behind Purple Platypus 3D printing a Paul McCartney figurine.
Paul McCartney released a blog in which he was 3D scanned for his music video, “Hope For the Future.” You can check out the behind the scenes video where all the magic happened, you can forward to 1:03 where Sir Paul was scanned. We must do something about it. What’s a better way to hope for the future than with the technology of the future? Naturally, we’re going to take this idea, spread our wings and fly. (Are you catching onto our puns with Paul McCartney songs?)
So we turned to our trusted friend, Jason Brown, in the Service Department. Jason, a printer guru and someone who is always “in-the-know,” made Sir Paul of Purple Platypus what it is today—an 11K liked Instagram phenomenon. That’s one for the books!
Once we got the green light to move forward, we darted our way over to our showroom and started file preparation for 3D printing Sir Paul on the Stratasys Objet Eden 260V. In a matter of a few hours, out comes the great Paul McCartney in VeroGrey material printed in high quality mode (16 microns). From belt loops to his button details around his collar, we’re pretty impressed with the precision and amount of detail the scan translated into the .STL file.
We’re excited to see all the innovative ways 3D printing will make an impact across various industries. We definitely have #HopeForTheFuture. We’re right there with ya, Paul McCartney!
